It took me a stupid long time to get the money over to SSPCA, but I finally did last week. The final total is RM900. You’re seeing a RM850 above because the final RM50 is from Dona from SSPCA, who decided that she wanted to contribute.

So there you go. My thanks to everyone who donated, participated in the auction and spread the word. Now that I finally got this off my plate, I can move on.

Some of you may be wondering if we’re going bald this year! The answer is ‘yes’ and I’m looking forward to doing it again. However, I’m not sure if I’ll go all out collecting your money again this time. It’s mentally exhausting! But we’ll see what the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society have in mind this year. You have a couple of months to talk yourself into doing it if you’ve been looking for an excuse!

Crafterday: Custom Denim Bagget

I took a custom order for a purse organiser that’s a little manlier for Project Snip-Snip. This actually set the ball rolling for a new name. “Purse organiser” is a mouthful. Functional, but a mouthful. It didn’t occur to me that some men might like it as well. And we also must agree that some girls don’t like crazy ass prints.

I eventually arrived at “Bagget”. I was thinking “baggage” and “pocket” and “small baggage” and trying to combine the three.

I was out of denim but Peggy had leftovers from a previous project which had enough leftovers for several other project, including this one!

It fell just a teeny bit short of my 20″x8″ excluding allowance so I cut a piece off the other end and patch in the missing corner.

The wavy stitching was an after thought. I originally sew it flat but my stitch ran crooked… which made me think why not do it on purpose? After all, I’m using a contrasting thread. I like the result – a decorative detail in one corner.

The denim was thick enough not to need interfacing on the inside, so what I did was press the hems for the outer layer around a template I have specially for this purpose, ironed on the interfacing for the inner layer (recycled t-shirt material) and sew both sides together.

Here’s a look of the wavy stitch detail on the right side and the smooth black t-shirt fabric that will become the lining.

After sewing down both ends, I measured out pockets according to order specification. If I’m making custom orders, you can give me the measurements of up to four items to ensure the best fit for your essentials.

And then I sew it all down. I knotted the ends my hand rather than using the machine. The bigger the thread, the messier it’s gonna look when I “lock” the ends.

And we’re done! Here’s how it looks from the detailed end.

The new owner sent me a photo of how it looks inside his messenger bag.

Indeed the one lesson I learn from this is that the guys also have trouble keeping their things in place. I will look out for more rugged material so I can make neutral-looking baggets available for anyone who doesn’t like flower prints or patterns.

So that’s an extra RM50 in the Snip-snip fund!

This is probably the last post I’ll make about Project Snip-Snip for a while. It’s going to get very busy at work tomorrow and I’ll have less time than I had in the last couple of weeks.

The current tally is as follows:

Donations: RM510
Auction: RM127
Reserve: RM100

Donations are money given; Auction is the amount raised from the auctions; and Reserve is the two items that weren’t auctioned off. If nobody takes them, I will for RM50 each.

I’ll arrange to bring the money in to SSPCA after the DUN sitting is over.

This doesn’t mean you can’t keep donating if you haven’t. You can give the money to me directly or contact me for my bank account number.

Because some of you have asked, no, I don’t take international donations. I always believe that in minor issues like saving the local population of pets, you should take care of the needs in your area before you send money to another country. Besides, I hear that the service charges aren’t worth it.

Project Snip-Snip: Birdbirdbird Necklace

The last item is last because it’s special. Shuku was the first person I told about this year’s birthday project. She immediately purchased herself a first class ticket on the crazy train.

Shuku and I go back a long way, although not in the way traditionally assumed when someone uses that phrase. We first met in 1988. We didn’t see each other again until 2008, although we did briefly meet on IRC somewhere in between that. After we met again in 2008, we really didn’t have an excuse not to keep in touch, especially when her brother was right about us having plenty in common.

One of the things we have in common is a love for the absurd adventures of Eben and Snooch at Two Lumps. Shuku’s made jewellery inspired by Calvin & Hobbes before and offered to make a piece of jewellery for the auction. It didn’t take us long to agree that kitteh funnies at Two Lumps is perfect inspiration for a piece going in benefit of SSPCA.

The necklace is really inspired by three strips from Two Lumps:

…but we’ve been calling it Birdbirdbird.

I encourage you to look at her process diary to appreciate the amount of work that went into this:

It’s a special kind of crazy that can marry comic strips, washers and CD ends. As Snooch said in the Muffin Love n’ Lemon strip, “GENIUS!”

You don’t get to bid for this. I’m putting down RM50 into the Snip-Snip fund for it and another RM50 for the Card Holder that nobody bid for either.

Of course if any of you decided that you want either items, you’re free to make me an offer above RM50. First offer via email from anywhere in Malaysia for either items get it.

You better hurry. Ducky’s already moving in.

Project Snip-Snip: Card Holder

Wandering back into the realms of keeping your stuff in place, say hello to our last organisational item (but not the last item in this auction) – Andrea Tan‘s cheetah print card holder.

Made of felt and hand-stitched, this card holder has four pockets and each can hold two cards, be it the scatter of membership cards, or if you simply want a fun and funky way of keeping your name cards (and the ones you collect) in order.

Andrea has a shop here, which I recommend you visit for other cute stuff. Meanwhile, we still have a target to hit so bid away!
