The Vanishing Tattoo

Too tired to give a shit about much now, but to those of you who are interested, the Tun Abdul Razak Museum will be screening “The Vanishing Tattoo” this Friday at 3pm.

It’s open to the public and I presume it’s free. I forgot to ask that bit, but they sounded really surprised when I called… maybe because they didn’t expect anyone to actually turn up at such an odd hour of the week. The guy I spoke to said he’ll call me back to confirm. A lady did within 10 minutes, and said that they’ll keep me informed about their future events, to which I said “Please do” since events equal possible article.

This is what we’re probably watching. I’ll be really cranky if it turns out to be another Vanishing Tattoo that I didn’t know about.

So if you’re back on holiday or can tangkap ular from work for an hour are available at the time, drop by… or else I’ll probably be the only one there.

To those of you in Kuching, I’m starting to use Upcoming.com to record upcoming events in town (and you can too). It’s similar to meetup.com, except it’s event-centric and they don’t make you pay to be able to use it. If you’re reading this from my blogspot, you have to scroll down a bit to see the widget in my sidebar. It’s also on my website.

…almost.

The point being RotK was not the extended version. Am mildly disappointed but at the same time, I couldn’t wait for the whole thing to finish. We watched it during Day 2 of the first annual Star Rainforest Movie Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village. It started at 7pm and finished around 5:30am the next day. We spreaded a mat on the huge waterproof banner they provided and laid our heads on our backpacks.

It was like a picnic and a slumber party with hundreds of strangers. By the time it was over, there were perhaps about 50 of us left.

The weather was perfect. It was a clear starry night, cool enough to make my toes a bit cold but not uncomfortably so. I suppose I can thank the Arctic weather conditioning on the office. When it was nearing morning, dew set in and my jeans got damp from knee down from it.

We drove back to Kuching as the sun rose.

This morning, I finished writing a review on The Legend of the Red Curse, which screened its first show on the 3rd Oct in the gala premiere at Star Cineplex.

It wasn’t easy to write for two reasons:

(1) I’ve been less kind to better movies than this. However, curse my inside knowledge on things that happened behind-the-scenes, which resulted in a great number of flaws in the movie, which resulted in me being unable to criticise much. I believe that the cast and crew are well too aware of this too, but they also know that they can’t stop now and and are making the best of it.

(2) Somebody had to have the balls to stick his neck out where a kicking off a Sarawakian feature film is concerned. There’s been plenty of nice little short films from our local film makers that will never see the big screen, but nobody’s made a big film for a rather obvious reason: lack of funds. Hock Star has money to burn, so why not? I do know that they aren’t stopping here and if anything, this has taught them how to make a movie better next time. Their “this is our first time” excuse has expired.

Anyway, the feedback is just starting to trickle in. You can see what people are saying at the following forums, which I’ll update as I find:

  • Sarawak Film Society
  • CatsCity
  • Cari.com.my
