Project Snip-Snip: Purse Organiser

[Oct 28, 11:06pm] SOLD TO ANNNA for RM42! Thanks for playing, everyone. And look out for the next auction tomorrow night. :D
Welcome to the Project Snip-Snip Auction!
The first item up for auction is none other than the purse organiser I’ve been trying out and posting about a few weeks back.
Yes, it looks a bit funny now because I haven’t sewn the pockets down. But you should know how the finished product looks like by now. If not, click on the link up there.
The reason I haven’t sewn in the pockets is because I’ll customise it for the winner. Everyone has different types of essentials that they must carry with them, right? I want to make sure that your handphone or name card holder fits perfectly.
The organiser is 20″ x 4″. This is long enough to fit about 7 pockets of various sizes.
The outer material is a velvety plush fabric reclaimed from a pair of track pants I bought at FOS and didn’t like because it was way too hot to wear for exercise. The lining is a cotton print that I bought on a whim because I found the pink attractive.
This has to be the prettiest one I’ve made so far.
Comments have been set to unmoderated so those of you who have not commented before can bid without your comment being held back.
This auction will close on Oct 28, at 11pm. Last bid by the timestamp on the comment, wins.

Project Snip-Snip: How to donate
by tarlia on October 26, 2009

I’ve gotten quite a bit of donations and pledges since my last post, and that was before I even managed to talk about how and where! So this post is to address the issue of how you can gimme your money.
It’s actually very simple.
If you’re from outside Malaysia, I do not have any way of taking international donations. Plus, I don’t really approve of wasting time with additional steps of getting your money from there to here when they are likely animal shelters in your area who could use a hand. What I’d recommend is that you find an SPCA or animal welfare cause near you and make a donation to them. Better yet, drop by to see how you can help. Or give an animal a home if you’ve been thinking doing something like that.

If you’re Malaysian, you can email me at tarlia[AT]gmail.com or comment in this post for my bank account number. Those living in Kuching can optionally just arrange to meet and pass it to me.
You can also wait to see if there’s anything you’d like to bid for in my Birthday Auction. Here’s how it works:
1. I’ll post an item with a starting price on my blog.
2. You can bid for it for the next 24 to 48 hours by posting your bid in the comment.
3. Last bid in by the closing of the auction (according to timestamp), wins.
4. You bank in the money to me and I’ll mail you the item. (If you’re in Kuching, we can meet to exchange goods.)
5. The new item will only be posted once the previous auction closes.
You must be wondering what items I’m talking about.
My other current interest is crafting. I have friends who make things too and a few of them have agreed to sponsor an item for my Birthday Auction. There is a card holder made of felt, a passport holder and a necklace. I’m contributing a purse organiser since many of you have been asking about it.
All have been specially made (or will be) for the occasion, and money from the winning bid goes straight into the Snip-Snip fund.
This is the week of the auction. Look out for the first item, coming very soon.

Project Snip-Snip

I’m kicking off my annual Birthday Project a bit later than I planned due to having much less free time than I did last year. But I’m timing it just so you’ll know about it and will keep it in mind as you all get your salaries at the end of this month. ;-)
I really don’t enjoy the “what should I get someone for their birthday?” dilemma every time someone’s birthday comes along. I wrote a little about it last year, which still stands true this year:
“It is my firm belief that people should not give me random stuff. There isn’t anything I really need right now, and while tokens are nice, it creates clutter. There’s stuff that you need and there’s stuff that sits there because people give it to you without thinking if you’ll actually find that useful. I’ve written about this topic here.
There’s no need to buy me dinner either. As you can tell, I feed myself pretty well.“ - Time & Money, Sept 24, 2008.
Besides sparing you guys the angst when it’s my birthday, I also want to channel the good wishes and would-be present cost into a cause of my choice. Last year, we raised RM500 for Habitat for Humanity. Some of you came on a build with me. We had fun.
This year, the beneficiary of my birthday money is the Sarawak Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). I’m particularly interested in channeling some money into their neutering scheme because it’s something I strongly believe in. Neutering your pets keep the population of unwanted animals down. The SSPCA shelter is already bursting at the seams from all the cats and dogs that have no loving home to go to.
SSPCA has something called the Pilot Neutering Scheme (PNS) in which they neuter all the animals under their care to stop them from breeding. If you were to walk into the shelter an adopt a pet at any given day, you can be assured that the animal is already neutered. You don’t have to worry about taking it to the vet yourself. If the pet is adopted by someone who doesn’t care or believe in neutering, well… let’s just say you’re one of the reasons why animal welfare organisations prefer to get it done before the pet goes to you.
PNS is on hold due to lack of funding. Currently the SSPCA only neuter cats and dogs that are taken out to adoption drives. Even then, the cost for these are sponsored by various individuals and companies.
I was talking to SSPCA Chairperson Rebecca D’Cruz the other day and she told me that the basic cost for neutering a cat or dog with one of their panel vets is RM50. That’s a basic, complication-free snip-snip on an otherwise healthy animal.
Readers of this blog and other friends contributed a grand total of RM500 last year. I was originally gonna aim for RM500 again but realised that it’s only gonna put an end to the sex life of 10 cats and dogs. What’s 10? I see 10 stray cats and dogs on a daily basis. Let’s shoot for 30.
RM50 x 30 = RM1,500
This is perfectly doable, right? If 30 of you give me RM50 each, we can pay for the neutering of 30 animals. Easy.
However, I do have something up my sleeve this year apart from just asking you to give me money. Because giving me money gets you very little in return, apart from my gratitude. On the last week of October, something will be happening on this blog that will allow some of you to get something in exchange for your donation.
I will be announcing it some time next week, so keep an eye on this blog.
Of course there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from sending in your donations now. Just contact me over Facebook or my email (tarlia[AT]gmail.com) for my M2U account number. And spread the word!
